The first tank was built in Lincoln by William Foster & Co. During its development, it was code-named ‘Water Carrier for Mesopotamia’. This became shortened by the workforce to ‘water tank’ and eventually it was shortened again to ‘tank’ and the word entered the English language. This tank, which is on display at the Museum of Lincolnshire Life in Lincoln, was in service in France during the First World War. (Photo: Jon’s pics [CC BY-SA 2.0])
