The Old Mill Hotel

The Old Mill Hotel is a converted 16th-century mill that is a charming place to stay with a delightful riverside location with access to the city centre via the Town Path.

It is a small hotel with 11 rooms set over three levels. All rooms have comfortable beds, a flatscreen television, ironing facilities, tea and coffee making facilities (with Tassimo coffee machines) and en suite bathrooms.

The hotel has its own pub that features original beams, a stone floor and an open fireplace. The pub also has a large outdoor dining area, which is a lovely spot to enjoy a drink on a sunny day.

It should be noted that the rooms immediately above the bar can get noisy on busy nights and you may want to take this into account if you’re a light sleeper who is looking at staying in Salisbury on a Friday or Saturday night.

It is a charming hotel in a 15th-century building, although there are some features dating back as far as 1250. In the 16th century, the building was converted into a paper mill (the first in England) and, more recently, into a hotel. Although the old building adds to the hotel’s charm, it does mean that some facilities are not quite as orderly as you would find in a more modern hotel and it is not particularly suitable for people with mobility issues.

The riverside location is lovely and some rooms offer views across the water meadows to the cathedral, while others offer views of the Harnham Hills, the River Nadder (a tributary of the Avon) or the hotel’s riverside garden.

Although the hotel is not in the centre of town, it has a cracking location on the banks of the River Nadder with access to the city centre via the Town Path, which is a lovely public footpath that meanders through Salisbury’s water meadows. Even though this is a semi-rural walking trail, it is entirely paved and suitable for wheelchairs (although the hotel is not). Most points of interest in Salisbury (including the railway station, the city centre and the cathedral) are around a 15-minute walk from the hotel.
