The Royal Hotel is a Victoria-era railway hotel in Bath, Somerset that is ideally situated if you’re travelling by train.
It is a Grade II listed building that was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1846 to serve the new Bath Spa railway station.
The hotel has 35 guest rooms, which all have comfortable beds, a flatscreen television, a work desk, a trouser press, tea and coffee making facilities and en suite bathrooms. Superior rooms also feature four-poster beds and bathrobes.
The rooms have a traditional-style decor that some people may find a little dated but it is ideal if you prefer to stay somewhere with a little more character than your standard chain hotel.
Brasserie Brunel is the hotel’s restaurant, which is designed in the style of a Parisian brasserie. It has a British and French-inspired menu with roast lamb or chicken on Sundays. There is a good value prix fixe menu and hotel guests can choose any item from the à la carte menu for a fixed price.
The hotel also has a nice lounge bar, although it doesn’t have the character of a proper pub.
Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout the hotel.
The Royal Hotel is right across the street from Bath Spa railway station, which makes it an ideal place to stay if you’re travelling by train. This places the hotel at the southern end of the city centre, a five-minute walk from Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths and most other points of interest in Bath are no more than a 10–15-minute walk away.
