The Best Western Swan Hotel in Wells is a four-star hotel in a 600-year-old coaching inn. It is a historic hotel that claims to be the United Kingdom’s oldest continuously operating hotel.
The Swan Hotel has historically been one of Wells’ leading hotels and former guests have included George Bernard Shaw, Winston Churchill, King Henry VII and Queen Anne of Denmark.
The 50 guest rooms all have comfortable beds, a flatscreen television, a work desk, ironing facilities, tea and coffee making facilities and an en suite bathroom. Many of the rooms have views of the west front of Wells Cathedral.
The room decor is split between a traditional style that some people may find a little over the top and a more restrained contemporary style.
The hotel’s restaurant serves modern British cuisine in a sophisticated environment and it is one of the better places to dine in Wells. The adjoining bar is a great spot for a drink and you can choose from over 100 different types of gin.
The hotel is also a great spot for afternoon tea, which you can enjoy either in front of the open fireplace in the cosy lounge or in the hotel’s outdoor terrace, which offers spectacular views of Wells Cathedral.
The hotel also has its own fitness centre.
