Ancient Gatehouse Hotel

There are only nine guest rooms at the Ancient Gatehouse, which have comfortable beds, a work desk, a flatscreen television, tea and coffee making facilities and en suite bathrooms. The rooms have a traditional-style decor that some people may find dated and some of the rooms have period features such as four-poster beds. Some of the rooms have views of the west front of Wells Cathedral.

The historic nature of the building means that rooms are accessible via a narrow stone spiral staircase, which means that it is not suitable for guests with mobility problems.

It is a cosy place to stay in an old building with lots of character, although it is not up to the same standard as the nearby Swan Hotel or the White Hart Inn.

The adjoining Rugantino restaurant is highly regarded and serves authentic Italian cuisine.

The hotel is located at the northeast end of the city centre right next to the gatehouse that leads to Cathedral Green. Wells’ main attractions are right on your doorstep and from here is it only a two-minute walk to Wells Cathedral and the Wells and Mendip Museum and the Bishop’s Palace is only a four-minute walk away.
