The Travelodge London Excel hotel near the ExCeL London conference and exhibition centre in East London is a good value place to stay, particularly on days when there are no events scheduled at ExCeL.
Travelodge London Excel has recently been updated to feature Travelodge’s new interior design, which makes this hotel nicer than the average Travelodge.
Rooms at the Travelodge London Excel are a mix of double and family rooms. All rooms include comfortable king-size beds, a television, a work desk, tea and coffee making facilities and an en suite bathroom with a shower.
There are also some wheelchair-accessible rooms available.
The hotel’s Standard Room Plus rooms are a small upgrade over standard rooms and feature a pod espresso coffee machine. These rooms are located on the hotel’s quietest floor and guests staying in these rooms get free Wi-Fi internet access.
This hotel also has a small bar and restaurant but there are also other places to eat nearby both inside nearby hotels and at the nearby exhibition centre.
Unlike most other hotels, only your first 30 minutes of Wi-Fi wireless internet is free. If you need more internet you have to pay £3 for 24 hours.
Although this is a budget hotel, prices can fluctuate depending on demand and it can be more expensive staying here during peak periods although in most cases this hotel is a cheaper alternative to more centrally-located hotels.
The surrounding neighbourhood is hardly the most charming area and consists mostly of other hotels, a few office buildings and the elevated DLR line across the road. Although there is no real shopping area nearby, other hotels in the immediate vicinity have their own bars and restaurants that you can use and there is a fairly good pub, the Fox @ Connaught, less than a five-minute walk from the hotel. The ExCeL London conference and exhibition centre is less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel and you can walk to the terminal building at London City Airport in around 15 minutes.
The closest DLR station is Royal Albert (in zone three), which has trains to Tower Gateway (near the Tower of London) every 10 minutes. En route you can transfer to the Jubilee line at Canning Town. The journey time to Tower Gateway is 20 minutes.
Parking is available at the hotel but it costs £10 for 24 hours.
There are over 500 Travelodge hotels in the United Kingdom. Travelodges in Great Britain, Ireland and Spain are a separate business to the Travelodge hotels that operate in Canada and the USA (which are run by Wyndham) and the Travelodge hotel chain in Australia and New Zealand (which is part of TFE Hotels). Although all Travelodge hotels worldwide serve the same ‘quality budget’ end of the market, if you’re used to Travelodge hotels in Australia, New Zealand or North America their hotels in the UK may be a little different to what you are used to.
