Aloft London Excel is the closest hotel to the ExCeL exhibition centre in London’s Docklands. Being the only hotel directly connected to ExCeL, it is a very popular option with business travellers visiting London for an event at ExCeL.
Essentially, Aloft is a more subdued (and usually cheaper) alternative to the W Hotels brand, which is also operated by Marriott. While still appealing primarily to the same millennial market, Aloft hotels have toned down some of the aspects of its branding so it doesn’t quite alienate some guests who don’t fit into its core demographic.
The hotel has 252 rooms spread over eight floors. All rooms are air-conditioned and have comfortable beds, a work desk, a flatscreen television, ironing facilities, tea and coffee making facilities and an en suite bathroom with a spacious walk-in shower.
Standard guest rooms are 24m² (258 sq ft) and suites are 48–51m² (516–549 sq ft).
The hotel’s Docksider Restaurant offers a more upmarket take on pub-style food with the standard hotel restaurant choice of salads, grilled meats, pizza and pub favourites.
The W XYZ Bar is both a trendy late-night bar and also a more casual environment for a bite to eat while the Re:mix Lounge bar offers a quieter spot to enjoy something to drink. Re:fuel is the hotel’s 24-hour snack bar.
The Re:charge fitness centre includes both a 24-hour gym and an indoor swimming pool.
Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout the hotel.
It is the only hotel that is connected directly to the ExCeL exhibition and convention centre. It is also within walking distance to London City Airport, with the terminal building just a 20-minute walk from the hotel. Aloft London Excel is part of a cluster of hotels on the eastern side of ExCeL (which also include the DoubleTree by Hilton ExCeL, a Hampton by Hilton, a Holiday Inn Express, a Moxy, a Premier Inn and a Travelodge).
The immediate neighbourhood feels barren and charmless with modern hotels surrounded by car parking; however, its proximity to ExCeL and Prince Regent DLR station, a four-minute walk away, makes it the best located of the hotels on this side of ExCeL.
From Prince Regent DLR station, it is around a 20-minute ride into The City with trains running every eight minutes or so.
On-site car parking is available but it costs £16 per day.
