Cavendish Hotel

The Cavendish Hotel is an imposing hotel with a great location right by the seafront. It is a good value accommodation option close to central Eastbourne. It is run by Britannia hotels but don’t let that put you off as it is nicer than other hotels in the Britannia hotel chain.

The hotel has 148 guest bedrooms. All rooms have televisions and tea and coffee making facilities and many of them have en suite bathrooms, however, some of the cheaper rooms do not have their own bathroom facilities.

Rooms at the front of the hotel have lovely sea views and rooms at the rear have views of the Sussex Downs. There are some rooms with no windows, although these rooms should be indicated when you make your booking.

Three of the rooms are wheelchair accessible as are public areas on the ground floor, although the wheelchair entrance is at the rear of the building.

Wi-Fi wireless internet access is free in public areas and in the rooms you get two 20-minute free Wi-Fi sessions per day, or you can pay £7 for 24 hours unlimited access.

The Cavendish is part of the Britannia hotel chain. Most hotels run by Britannia are not very well regarded with Britannia coming last for six years running in the annual Which? customer survey of UK hotel chains. Despite this, the Cavendish gets surprisingly good customer feedback and it seems to be a much nicer place to stay than other Britannia hotels.

The main reason why the Cavendish gets relatively good reviews is probably that Britannia only acquired the hotel in 2015 and prior to this, it was a four-star hotel with a good reputation.

Although it is a step up from other hotels in the Britannia chain, standards are starting to fall as essential maintenance is not carried out in the same manner as it was under its previous ownership. Like other hotels run by Britannia, first impressions are somewhat positive with a grand facade and an impressive reception area but the standards inside the rooms are not as good as the hotel’s public areas.

The hotel features the Marine Restaurant and the Coronet Bar and Lounge, which are nothing special but they are nicer than the bars and restaurants in other Britannia hotels. The Library is another guest lounge that it is a lovely spot to sit and read a newspaper or play a board game.

The Cavendish has a prominent location on the Eastbourne seafront around midway between the Lifeboat Museum and Eastbourne Pier. It is around a five-minute walk to the town centre and 12 minutes to the railway station.

The hotel has 40 car parking spaces (£8 for 24 hours) with no height restrictions.
