Macdonald Alveston Manor

The Macdonald Alveston Manor Hotel is a four-star hotel in a manor house on the eastern side of the River Avon. It is a hotel with loads of character inside an old Tudor-era building that dates back to Shakespeare’s day.

It is a beautiful old building, which means that this hotel has loads of character although guest reviews are mixed with some people saying that the hotel feels a little tired and others complaining about the poor air-conditioning and heating in the rooms.

The hotel should appeal to Shakespeare fans and it is said that William Shakespeare first staged A Midsummer Night’s Dream under the cedar tree at the rear of the hotel in the late 1590s.

The 133 guest rooms all have comfortable beds, a writing desk, a flatscreen telly, ironing facilities (including a trouser press), tea and coffee making facilities and en suite bathrooms. Wheelchair-accessible rooms are also available.

Rooms have a traditional decor that suits the historic building, although some guests find it a little dated.

The hotel’s Manor Restaurant serves modern British cuisine in a fine dining environment

The Blue Lounge is the hotel’s oak-panelled lounge bar, which has a clubby atmosphere that makes it the ideal place to enjoy afternoon tea or a glass of scotch. Lunch and dinner are also available at the Blue Lounge but with a simpler menu than the Manor Restaurant.

The Manor Bar is another popular spot for a drink. This split-level area features a large fireplace that makes it a welcoming place if you’re visiting during winter.

Other facilities include a leisure club with an 18m- (59 ft)-long heated swimming pool and a fitness centre plus an Elemis spa with a sauna and steam room.

Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout the hotel.

The town centre is a picturesque 10-minute walk from the hotel across the historic Clopton Bridge. Attractions on the eastern side of the river include the butterfly farm, the Stratford Big Wheel and Avon Boating’s departure point for scenic cruises on the River Avon, which are all around a five-minute walk from the hotel. Most other points of interest are within a 15-minute walk, except for the railway station (20 minutes) and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage (35 minutes).

Car parking is available but it costs £7 per day.
