The Roseate Reading

The Roseate is a restored townhouse in Reading’s town centre that makes for a delightful luxury escape. Most people don’t think of Reading as a romantic weekend getaway but with a hotel like The Roseate Reading, it very well could be.

The five-star hotel is a grade II listed building that was constructed in 1911 as Berkshire’s Shire Hall. Berkshire County Council moved to a new Shire Hall in 1980 and the building was used as offices before being converted to the Forbury Hotel in 2006. The hotel is now known as The Roseate.

It is an impressive place to stay and it is evident that a lot of attention has been put into the hotel’s design. The hotel features a massive chandelier (with 86,000 Italian glass beads), an oak-panelled library with a fireplace and the hotel even has its own in-house cinema that seats 30 people and has regular screenings of classic films.

The Roseate has 55 larger-than-usual guest rooms. All rooms feature king-size beds, a flatscreen television, a work desk, a laptop safe, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, a fridge, tea and coffee making facilities including a Nespresso coffee pod machine plus a large en-suite bathroom with a walk-in monsoon shower and Penhaligon toiletries.

The hotel’s suites offer the same amenities but with more space and greater attention to detail with extras such as a four-poster bed, a free-standing copper bathtub and even your own steam room.

There is free Wi-Fi wireless internet access throughout the hotel.

In the basement, you’ll find Cerise, the hotel’s in-house restaurant which has a fine dining menu based on modern British and Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant has a couple of cosy alcoves and there is also a cocktail bar and a hidden garden.

The Roseate has a lovely location across the road from Forbury Gardens. From here you can walk to the ruins of Reading Abbey in just a couple of minutes, Reading Museum and The Oracle shopping centre are a four-minute walk away and Reading railway station is only a five-minute walk from the hotel.

If you don’t normally stay in luxury hotels, The Roseate is a great spot for a special treat. Off-season you can quite often find rooms here at surprisingly affordable rates and in any case, a night at The Roseate is considerably better value than what you would pay for a similar hotel in London.
